Technical anodizing, also known as sulfuric acid anodizing or eloxing, is the electrochemical conversion of aluminum into aluminum oxide, providing optimal adhesion. This oxide layer forms partially on the surface and partially grows into the base material. The anodized layer is much harder than the base material, minimizing the risk of surface damage and significantly improving wear resistance compared to bare aluminum. During the treatment, a large number of fine pores develop in the oxide layer. These pores are typically sealed after anodizing, resulting in excellent corrosion resistance. As a guideline for dimensional changes caused by sulfuric acid anodizing, a build-up/penetration ratio of approximately 1/3 – 2/3 of the applied layer thickness can be expected.
