Hard anodizing produces thicker and significantly harder layers than standard sulfuric acid anodizing. The coating is darker in color and can vary depending on layer thickness, process parameters, alloy, and any heat treatment. Achieving a uniform color can be challenging, but the protection and wear resistance are excellent. Due to the relatively high layer thickness, it is often necessary to adjust or mask critical dimensions beforehand. As a guideline, the dimensional change from hard anodizing can be estimated at a 50–50 ratio between build-up and penetration of the applied layer thickness. Please contact us for specific advice.
