Hard anodizing

For maximum protection and durability

Hard anodizing produces thicker and significantly harder layers than standard sulfuric acid anodizing. The coating is darker in color and can vary depending on layer thickness, process parameters, alloy, and any heat treatment. Achieving a uniform color can be challenging, but the protection and wear resistance are excellent. Due to the relatively high layer thickness, it is often necessary to adjust or mask critical dimensions beforehand. As a guideline, the dimensional change from hard anodizing can be estimated at a 50–50 ratio between build-up and penetration of the applied layer thickness. Please contact us for specific advice.

Capabilities:

  • With a limited layer thickness of 20–25 µm, the process can be performed with dimensional stability to minimize large changes. Depending on the requested tolerances, masking may still be necessary. Please contact your Surface Treatment representative for more information.
  • Masking of holes and surfaces for hard anodizing is possible.
  • The hard anodized layer can be colored.
  • Hard anodizing increases surface roughness.
  • High-pressure die-cast alloys can be anodized using a specially developed electrolyte.
  • Combination with Surlon®KE is possible to achieve a non-stick, wear-resistant, and self-lubricating surface, significantly reducing the friction coefficient.

Applications are mainly in automotive, machinery, electrical engineering, copier equipment, and aerospace industries.

Properties:

  • Extremely high wear resistance and surface hardness
  • Very high corrosion resistance if sealed
  • Good insulating properties

Standard specifications:
MIL-PRF-8625 Type III; Class 1 (uncolored) and Class 2 (colored)

  • Recommended layer thickness: 40–60 µm (range 20–120 µm possible depending on the chosen alloy)
  • Sealing: typically not sealed to maintain wear resistance

This process at our Netherlands facility is certified by NADCAP and various OEMs.
